It was a Thursday afternoon, I sat in a room that was filled to the brim with people…standing room only. We all waited in anticipation to hear how we ended Q1 (the first quarter of the year) against our goal. Working in sales, it’s all about the numbers. Nobody cares about how hard you tried or about the amount of effort you put into that presentation, the only thing that matters is “Did they buy?” and “For how much?”
But before the final numbers were revealed, the managers had a few presentations. My manager stood to say how important consistency was and how there were only a couple people who consistently hit weekly and monthly goals. Those people are “Person 1, Person2, and Casey Sharperson!” I looked up to hear the oohs and ahhs of my colleagues around me. Then, my manager proceeded to name those who were already qualified for an incentive trip that was still two months away. My name was called again.
As I smiled, I thought “Well this is awkward, half these people don’t know that tomorrow is my last day!”
Why on earth would I leave a position where I was doing well? Why did I feel compelled to make a shift, when things were going smoothly? Why would I pass up the potential to a promotion a few months down the line?
All questions that I asked myself and came to this conclusion.
Sometimes you have to make BOLD career moves.
Sometimes you have to make decisions that don’t make sense to everyone.
Sometimes you need to stretch and get uncomfortable to be reach your potential.
And for me, it was all those things and the certainty in my spirit that there was MORE. I was capable of doing and accomplishing MORE.
So, if you’re feeling ridiculously stuck and complacent, undervalued and underappreciated, or you have a sneaking suspicion that there is MORE, follow the steps below about how to make bold career moves.
And let’s be honest, nobody can look after you and your career - like you!
1. Make a List:
Where are you now? Where would you like to be?
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” Proverbs 21:5
2. Pray about the List:
Are your plans aligned with God’s plans?
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5
3. Make a Plan:
How are you going to reach those goals? Do you need a mentor or coach? How are you being held accountable?
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9
Get it DONE!:
Time waits for no (wo)man!
The more you procrastinate and feed the restless feeling you have, the more you are delaying your next.
What if your lack of execution is what’s holding you back from a promotion, a raise, a new job, or new responsibilities?
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us” Ephesians 3:20
Kick those excuses to the curb. It’s game time. Get Bold.
Hugs!
